Dear Board Chairman and Superintendents:
The national news coverage around measles outbreaks and childhood vaccinations is causing concern among parents and school officials. The TSBA legal team has composed this memo in order to provide you with helpful information regarding state law, the applicable regulations and information from the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH).

In Tennessee, no child is permitted to attend any public school, nursery school, kindergarten, preschool or child care facility until proof of immunization is given to the admissions officer of the school, nursery school, kindergarten, preschool or child care facility. TCA 49-6-5001 (c)(1)
Pursuant to the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, arriving military children shall be given thirty (30) days after enrollment to obtain any required immunizations. Click here to see additional information.
In Tennessee, parents do have the right to opt out of required vaccinations of their children for religious and medical reasons only. Click here to see exemption requirements.
